I had a wonderful time listening to the fourth graders give their Living History speeches! As I was listening, my brain was surfing for new learning and fun facts. Also, I noticed that many of the famous people featured demonstrated amazing character traits that lead to their successes.
Please share your new learning, fun facts and/or thoughts about the important character traits of these famous people
I liked listening to the speakers. I aleady knew most people though. I learned that Millton Hershey invented Hersheys, he also invented Hershey's Kisses in 1907. He sold a factory for 100 million dollars! I did not know that Dr.Suess real name is Theodore. I also did not know that Amelia Earhart didn't like airplanes when she was a kid!
ReplyDeleteI thought that all of the presentations were great. So many amazing historical figures had to do threw so many challenges. For example Marie Carie died because she was trying to cure cancer! Literally she cured cancer. Marie was born in 1867 in that time Russia ruled over Poland Marie's home country. She was the first woman to win a Nobel Piece prize. In fact not only that but she was the first person to ever win two Nobel Piece prize.

I listened to four people: Mahatma Gandhi, Marie Curie, Elizabeth Blackwell, and Julliette Low. My partners were Poppy and Annie. This is what I learned:
ReplyDeleteMohandas (Mahatma) Gandhi was the youngest of five children. He was born on October 2nd, 1869. He lived in a wealthy family. He was married at age thirteen to Kasturba Gandhi. He died when he was shot on January 30th, 1948.
Marie Curie was born on November 7th, 1867. She was married to Pierre Curie. They invented radium! She had two children, Irène and Ève. Sadly, she died on July 4th, 1934, because she was exposed to so much radiation.
Elizabeth Blackwell was the first woman doctor. She was born in England on February 3rd, 1821. One day she went to visit her friend. Her friend was sick and didn't want a male doctor. So Elizabeth decided to be a doctor. Her parents didn't support her. They said that women could only be nurses (I could kill whoever started that!). But Elizabeth didn't give up. She went to many different medical colleges and got rejected until finally she found a college that didn't, Geneva Medical College. She graduated first in her class and then became the first woman doctor! She died on May 31st, 1910. She also met Florence Nightingale, the Lady with the Lamp!
Juliette Gordon Low was the founder of Girl Scouts, originally called Girl Guides. She was the second of six children. I didn't get much about her, but she went to college in New York and founded Girl Guides in Europe! She died of breast cancer on January 17th, 1927. She had struggled against it for a few years privately but then couldn't hold it off anymore.
I loved the Living History Museum!
