I totally agree, Skyler. I also think that writing may have given the travelers comfort and time to really think about their experiences. As they wrote, they probably laughed and cried.
I AGREEEE!!!!! to Ben. and I also think that journals were to write about their day and when they are older they can read over and remember what they did as a child and how much fun they had!
I think they kept a journal because it may have been passed down from generation to geranation. And also maybe it was because they wanted every body to see how life was on the Oregon Trail.
I think people back in the 1850s kept journals because they wanted to keep track of their journey and so people could know what it was like on the Oregon Trail.
I think people kept a journal more back in the 1840's and 1850's because maybe so they could share their stories with their kids after the trail is over if they were still alive...
I think they used journals to remember what they did on the trail and to show there feeling. I also think that it was just a book to write in for free time.
One of the reasons I think they kept a journal is because if they have a grandparent that was staying or anyone else that was staying they would write. And when they got to oregon they would send it back to Independence, Missouri.
I think more people journaled in the 1840

ReplyDeleteI think a lot of people kept a journal because they wanted to keep their memory, maybe.

DeleteI agree with Skyler. I think people kept a journal because they wanted to remember all the happy, scary, and heartbreaking moments.
ReplyDeleteI also think people used journals more back in the 1840's because they don't have the technology we have today.
DeleteOh, yes, Ethan! You are right on target! I am sure there would be Oregon Trail blogs, wikis, Skyping grandparents back East, etc!!!
DeleteI AGREEE Ethan
