Getting to know characters!

We have been spending time studying characters traits and why characters act the way they do.

In Because of Winn Dixie, we have noticed a pattern that Opal is big hearted. First, she saved Winn Dixie from going to the pound.  She then convinces her dad to give Winn-Dixie a home and gives him a bath.  She treats Winn Dixie like a friend.

What is your realistic fiction character like? What evidence do you have to support your theory?

  1. I am reading Rules of Civility. The main character is very brave. She stays in New York after her friend is hurt. She asks for more money at work. Also, she stands up for herself when a good friend of her is dishonest. This character shows bravery over time! I am so sad that I am almost done with this wonderful book!

  3. I am reading The Tiny Hero of Ferny Creek Library. It is about a bug named Eddie who I think is brave because he goes to the library to save his Aunt Min. She got stuck there. It is a long journey for this little bug because he lives in the crack-in-the-wall in the science room and the library is down the hall.

  4. A few months ago I got this wonderful book from Book Fair. It is called "Out of my Mind" by Sharon Draper.
This book is about a (almost) eleven year old girl named Melody Brooks. She has never spoken a single word, and she has never even taken one step. She suffers from cerebral palsy, and her condition is so severe, that she must use a wheelchair.
But, still, I think she is very, very persistent. I know that because I have text evidence to support my answer, like:
    1. She goes to a 'special' classroom for disabled students. It is called "H-5". Some of her teachers think that those children are not even as smart as preschoolers, or even nursery schoolers! Melody's class goes over the "ABC's," or even the "AB's". In several months, they do not even get past the letter B!
But, eventually, Melody finds out it is her time to shine when they start putting Melody and her H-5 friends in another class, "a regular, normal class".
    2. Melody is determined to make new friends, but not everyone there is nice. For example, Claire and Molly are rude to the kids in H-5, especially Melody.
Mostly Claire is the one that is acting mean to Melody, but they both tease the kids about being "retarded".
On the bright side, Melody makes some wonderful new friends, like Rose, a nice girl in all of Melody's inclusion classes. (HUZZAH!)
    3. When Rose gets a cool new laptop, Melody is instantly inspired. With some help from her sister, Penny (well, not really Penny), her mother, and her mother's (and also one of Melody's) best friend, Ms. Violet Valencia (call her Ms. V for short), Melody receives an amazing contraption that will finally allow her to speak (kind of).
Finally Melody has a voice, but she wonders if everyone is ready to hear it.

  8. I am reading the Home Run Hitter. He is named Sylvester and he is really bad at baseball. The coach won't let him sign up then someone named George Brauth shows him how to play better baseball. During the next game for some reason, Sylvester plays really badly.

  12. I am reading The Adventure of Nanny Piggins. It starts with Mr. Green wanting a nanny. There is a sign in his front yard and it says "nanny wanted." Then a nanny showed up. She walked in and Mr. Green realized it was a pig. Mr. Green is cheap. Nanny Piggins says she costs 10 cents per hour! However, there is a problem. She will feed you chocolate for every singe meal and whenever you want! She is full hearted and very energetic and sometimes that is a problem. Mr. Green gave Nanny Piggins $500 for uniforms. Instead Nanny Piggins uses it to buy carnival tickets and the uniforms are handmade. That is a problem. I can't wait to find out what happens!
