Living History Museum!

I had a wonderful time listening to the fourth graders give their Living History speeches!

As I was listening, my brain was surfing for new learning and fun facts. Also, I noticed that many of the famous people featured demonstrated many of the stances such as flexibility, persistence, empathy, resilience and optimism that lead to their successes.

Please share your new learning, fun facts and/or thoughts about the important mindset stances of these famous people.

  1. I loved living history. I saw so many people that I know. It was awesome seeing all of the baseball players and learning facts from them. Lou Gehrig loved baseball he was born in 1903. Effa Manley was born in 1897 and died in 1952. I thought Orville Wright had flexibility on making planes again and again until it worked.

  7. I learned so many new things at the Living History Museum like Jane Goodall work as a waitress at a diner. She did this so she could raise enough money to go visit her friends farm in Africa. Steve Jobs dropped out of college and also Elizabeth Blackwell got an eye infection and had to get her eye removed and get a glass eye. That's so sad! Also, the guy who invented condensed milk is who invented Borden milk. I had that for breakfast this morning. My favorite fact that I learned Is that Nellie Bly a journalist went to a insane asylum just to see how they are treating women. An insane asylum is a place we're mentally ill people used to go we don't have them anymore This year living history fair was amazing I can't wait to do it next year for myself!

  11. I enjoyed Charles Drew’s speech. It talked about how he was born in 1904 he had three sisters one brother. He loves sports he became a doctor. He got people to donate blood and he died from getting in a car wreck and not having enough blood ,because he injured his arm and it was bleeding too much. I also enjoyed Jane Goodall's speech .About how she loved stuffed animals and real animals. she went on a trip to Africa and got to work with chimpanzees. She learned a lot about them and she had to use flexibility and persistence to get through her journey on finding chimpanzees .She is still living today. Another speech that was amazing was Wilma Rudolph's . She talked about being born in 1940. She had a disease in her leg which made her so she couldn't walk . She got a brace and most people thought that she would never be able to walk by herself again . One day she took off the brace and she was able to walk . She finally can go to school and she played basketball there her PE teacher got her a scholarship for track because he thought she would do well . She was the first person in her family to go to College. she went to the Olympics and won three gold medals and 1 Copper. One of my very favorite one was Florence Nightingale she was part of a wealthy family . Her aunt got sick and she stayed by her bed for a long time they did not go to the hospital because hospitals were dirty and only poor people went to them. Her aunt sadly died. She decided to be a nurse but her parents are not approved. Her parents did not approval, but she still went to nursing school and became a nurse. She helped soldiers and clean the hospitals. Everybody always thanked her. Sadly in 1910 she died. I had such a fun time today and I hope you did, too.

  13. Living history was so fun! Emma J. was my partner and first we went to Venus Williams. She was the first African-American to play tennis and went to Fort Lortloterdale for school. We also went to Nellie Bly and she holds the record for traveling the world in 72 days. She was born on May 5, 1864. Sadly, she died at 57. Then we went to Wilma Rudolph. She was born on June 23, 1940 and was diagnosed with Polio. She could not go to school for some time because of that. She won 1 bronze medal and 3 gold medals. But she died at 54 in 1994. Then we went to Sally Ride. She was born on May 26, 1951. As a kid she loved tennis. But when she grew older she went to Stanford University. Then she died at the age 61. Muhammad Ali was a boxer who was born in 1942. He got the Medal of Freedom. He went to supreme court For not going to the Army when he was suposed too. Then he sadly died in 2016. Marie Curie was born on November 7, 1837. She had 4 sisters and was the first woman to ever receive a Nobel Prize. I enjoyed Living History and I hope you did too. It was so much fun!

  15. I had so much fun at the Living History Fair today! I saw about twelve people in all, five on the first day and seven on the other day.
I liked Charles Drew’s speech. He was born on June 3rd, 1904 in Washington DC. He had three sisters but only one brother. He loved sports, but he became a doctor. He died from getting in a car crash and he had an arm injury because he was bleeding too much.
I also saw Wilma Rudolph. She was born in 1940. She had a disease in her leg called polio at age five. It caused her left leg to bend inward, and people thought she would never walk again. She got a leg brace and kept on exercising her leg. One day she took off the brace and she was able to walk, and proved the people who doubted her wrong. She finally could go to school and she played basketball. Her PE teacher got her a scholarship for track because he thought she would do well, and she was! She was the first person in her family to go to college, and she went to the Olympics and won three gold medals and 1 bronze medal. Sadly, she died at the age of fifty-four from brain cancer.
Another cool fact is that Nellie Bly (a journalist who was famous for going around the world in seventy-two days) went to a insane asylum just to see how they are treating women so she could write a book about it, and she went there on purpose! An insane asylum is a place where people used to go if they suffered from severe mental conditions. There aren't many asylums anymore.
I also went to Amelia Earhart. I learned that she was born July 24th 1897 and she never married, and I knew that she was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. So far, nobody knows how she died, but people have many theories.
I also saw Florence Nightingale (also known as The Lady with the Lamp). I learned that she was born on May 12th 1820 in Florence, Italy. She was named after her birthplace. One day, Florence’s aunt became very ill. Florence stayed by her bed for a long time. However, her family did not go to a hospital for her aunt because back then, hospitals were considered dirty and only poor people went to them. Later, her aunt died. Florence decided she wanted to become a nurse, but her parents did not approve.Even though they didn't approve, Florence still went to nursing school and became a nurse. She helped many of the wounded in the Korean War. She never married, and she died in 1910.
I also saw a lady named Condoleezza Rice. She was famous because once she was Secretary of State. She was born on November 14th, 1954, and she went to college at sixteen years old! She took International Politics in her school, and on August 14th, 1981 she graduated. She became good friends with the Bush family. Today Condoleezza Rice is still alive.
I loved Living History so much, and I hope you did too!

  16. I loved living history museum! I visited six people today (Althea Gibson, Condoleezza Rice, Florence Nightingale, Charles Drew, Steve Jobs and Milton Hershey). All these people have one thing in common: They pursued their dreams. They were optimistic, resilient, flexible, persistent and empathetic. Althea Gibson, a tennis player, golfer, and singer was persistent, because she had a lot of jobs and tried hard. Condoleezza Rice was resilient in trying hard and making mistakes. Florence Nightingale was empathetic because of all the people she helped, and she knew that it was a bad feeling being hurt, and she helped them. Charles Drew, Steve Jobs, and Milton Hershey were optimistic and flexible. We did something a little similar in second grade where we studied different people (I did Harriet Tubman), and made presentations and videos about their lives. I can't wait to do living history next year.

  17. Did you know that Steve Jobs liked working in the garage with his dad. Steve Jobs was born on February 24. In 1991 Steve Jobs had 3 kids. Sadly Steve Jobs died in 2011 and died at age 56 and got cancer. Did you know that Milton Hershey made all the hershey. Milton Hershey was born in pensively. Sadly Milton Hershey sister died of fever. In 1877 Milton Hershey got a job at a candy store. Sadly Milton Hershey died at age 88. Did you know that Jackie Robinson joined the army. Jackie Robinson was born in January. Jackie Robinson was the first black person to try to get into the major league. Sadly Jackie Robinson's son died in a car crash. Jackie Robinson had the highest batting average. Did you know that Nadia Comaneci went to the olympics at age 14. Nadia Comaneci was the first person to get a perfect 10. Right now she is still alive. Nellie Bly was born on a hot day in may. Nellie Bly went to jail on purpose. Nellie Bly died at age 57 because of pneumonia.
