It is just wonderful to be in Oregon! I still feel a little dusty from the trail!

Think back to the journaling, iBook creation, research, choosing a name and family, butter making...
  • Please share your favorite part of our Westward Expansion unit and WHY

  1. My favorite part was writing my journal. The most interesting thing is that there is a place called South Pass in Wyoming. I would say to next years Pioneers is to have a detailed journal.

  5. The Westward Expansion unit was so fun! My favorite part was writing the journal and sharing it at Pioneer hour. The most interesting fact is probably that in Oregon they each get a square mile of land. My advice is to add a lot of detail to the journal.

  8. I most enjoyed Pioneer Hour itself because we worked so hard during the time leading up to it. It just felt like a good grand finale. Also, the buffet was delicious! The most interesting thing I learned was everyone walked. Before, I thought you would ride in the wagon. My advice is not to try to do something that doesn't feel natural in journaling. Just stick with what makes you you!

  9. My favorite part of pioneer unit was how we got a journal and we wrote in it every day. The mast interesting part was how we made our own butter. We made our butter by putting some type of cream and milk in a jar, then we had each person in the class shake it for about 30 minutes, then we would let it sit. My favorite fact that I learned is that when they stopped at Independence Rock they would mix grease and gunpowder to make a paint that they would use to write there names on the rock. This has been my favorite unit so far in 3-P!

  10. Out of all the things we did,I have two favorite parts. Number one, I loved picking a name and family because you could pick whatever name you wanted. Number two, I also loved writing the journal because you could be creative as long as it was historically accurate. I think the most interesting thing I learned is that they took criminals. My advice is to have fun with it. I really enjoyed our pioneer unit!

  11. Out of all the things my favorite part was a tie between choosing our names and making our journal. I thought that taking the wheels off the wagon when they were crossing rivers was cool. My advise for next years pioneers is if something goes wrong keep your head up.

  12. My favorite part of westward expansion was writing the journal. The most interesting information is that the pioneers used buffalo chip's to make fire. I would tell the 2nd graders to shake the butter really well.

  13. I loved Pioneer Hour! It was a blast and It is one of my favorite parts about 3rd Grade! My personal favorite part about the Westward Expansion unit was writing our journals and reading them to our parents. Probably the most interesting piece of new learning to me was when I learned that the pioneers use buffalo poop also known as buffalo chips, to make their fire work. The advice I would give the next pioneers is to not use modern day words in their journal. And some other advice I would give is to shake the milk pretty hard.

  15. My favorite of our Westward Expansion unit was Pioneer Hour all of our hard work built up to that moment it turned out grate. An interesting fact I learned was that the pioneers put all the ingredients for butter in a barrel and hung it on the side of the wagon then took it off at the end of the day and butter was made. My advice for the 2nd graders is don't stress over much how ever things work out both your presentations will be great.
