Holiday Tradition Sharing

December is a month of celebrations. Our classmates celebrate both Hanukkah and Christmas. I am sure each of us has special family traditions, food and fun activities. Please share some of your favorite holiday customs with us!

  1. I celebrate Christmas, as you all know. One Greek tradition during the holidays is eating a big lamb dinner on Christmas day. Lamb is one of the most popular meats for the Greeks to eat duing holidays. In the old days, people would roast a whole lamb outside on a rotating spit (grill). Some families still do cook the lamb this way. My family just uses the oven. We also eat domadas at the meal. They are grape leaves stuffed with beef and rice soaked in a lemon sauce. I am making domadas for my family for the first time this year! Wish me luck! My family goes to church on Christmas Eve to celebrate Christ's birth. Christmas day is a day of opening gifts, enjoying food and just hanging out with family.

  3. I celebrate Christmas. My family has a tradition to celebrate Christmas with my dad's parents on Christmas Eve. Sometimes Santa goes to my grandparents on my dad's sides house when we are at dinner. I think it's fun to open some of the presents on Christmas Eve. It's one of my favorite traditions in my family. My family also makes cookies and puts a glass of milk out for Santa. I find it fun to make cookies with my dad. We make the cookies from scratch. My dad is the best cooker!! My aunt also comes in town from North Carolina to celebrate with us. In my family, Christmas Eve, and the whole Christmas Day is filled with fun things to do like spending time with my family. Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!! And happy Hanukkah!!!! ( Even though Hanukkah's over )

  4. Our family celebrates Hanukkah. One of my traditions is that we each get to light one of our own menorahs. We sometimes have Hanukkah parties. Even though Hanukkah only last eight nights, we get so many more presents because we have so many people that we get to celebrate with. Our newest tradition is that each Hanukkah we get a big present from my Mom and Dad. It's a trip somewhere. Last year we went to San Diego. This year we're going to New York. Happy holidays to everyone!

  5. I celebrate Christmas with my family. When it gets close to Christmas, my cousin comes from Virginia. Next to our big tree we have three little trees. One is blue. One is gold and a white tree. I have the gold one this year. It is gold and with lights. My grandparents come over and they bring a pretty big bag of presents. Then the night before Christmas we have a special plate and we put cookies for Santa on it. Before going to bed we get Christmas pajamas. That is what we do for Christmas.

  6. I celebrate Christmas. Every year my cousins come in town from Rye, New york. Their names are Sydney, Caroline and Hunter and my other cousins from Houston are Trey and Ainsley. We all get together Christmas night. We go to church, play together, eat food, set out reindeer food and sit by the fire and talk. On christmas morning we meet at my grandmother's and grandfather's house and open the presents that my Aunt, my uncle, my grandmother and grandfather
present. Then after christmas we fly to Tulsa, Oklahoma to visit my other grandmother, grandfather and cousins. My cousins names are Holt, Hunt and Hatcher. While we are there we open up the presents that my other grandmother, grandfather, Aunt and uncle gave us and we decorate cookies with both of my grandparents and cousins. And that is all I do for Christmas.

  8. I love the month of December!! I celebrate Christmas! I love the Christmas spirit with all of the trees, lights and happiness. One tradition is that on Christmas eve we always go to church and it is fun because we sing Christmas carols. My grandmother always comes from San Francisco to see us. My family looks at Christmas lights and there is this one house with really good lights. This year my cousin and aunt are coming. My cousin’s name is Benjamin and my aunt’s name well we call her Tia. We are all going to celebrate Christmas together. Around Christmas time we usually play this game called the pickle game. It is where a parent hides the pickle ornament ( you buy it) and the kids stay in another room. When the parents say you can come out the kids come out and look for the pickle. When one kid finds the pickle he or she gets a present and then the kid hides it. And when the next kid finds it he or she gets a present and he or she hides it And so on. At the end every kid gets a present. It is fun!!!! On Christmas we see if Santa came and see our presents. Then we to our Grandparents house for lunch with our aunt, uncle and cousins. At our Grandparents house we open presents and play with them. And that’s my usual tradition.

  16. As you probably already know, I celebrate both Christmas and Hanukah. I will start with Hanukah and end with Christmas because thats the way it goes in the year. Religion #1 . At hanukah my family says a preyer in hebrew [ hebrew is a jewish language] well we are lighting the candles. Each year we celebrate it at a different house. This year we did it at our cousins house. We had a big feast of chicken nuggets, apple sauce, potato latkes, and my favorite, CHOCOLATE GIELT! It was delicious! I'm sorry to rave on and on, but here's religion #2. At christmas in my family we wake up super early and check our stocking's, then we check to see if Santa ate his cookies, next we open our gifts, after that we go to our grandma's house and check our stockings, then open more presents, and finally we admire the christmas tree and talk as a family. Well thats all I have to say see you next time on MRS.PAPADAKES'HIDAWAY.ORG!!!!!
