Science Chat

Monday is your first science test. It is mainly on nutrition and also on the metric system.  I know that you are already studying. I would love to hear four to five facts or interesting things that you have learned during this unit. Please help me increase my background knowledge on these topics.

  1. how much water are you supposed to drink a day spoiler alert 8 glasses a day how much water is in you body 2/3 wow I'm very good at spoiling things now how about vitamins vitamin K helps... make scabs vitamin D helps... works with calcium to make strong bones and DD= Rickets good bye now!!!!!

  2. I have been studying a lot; all the food groups are grains, protein, veggies, fruits, dairies, fats, oils, and sweets. Calcium and vitamin D work together to make strong bones. All the carbs are: sugar which gives us fast but short lasting energy, starch which gives us slow long lasting energy, fiber that helps push food through our large intestine. Iron helps blood carry oxygen through our bodies. Next, all the vitamins are: vitamin A, C, D, and K.

    Did you know that your body is two thirds water? You also need to drink eight cups of water every day. Did you know that we have had two pyramids, and then they invented my plate? I learned that butter is really part of the fats, oils, and sweets group. Not the diary group.

  4. Well I have learned lots and it would take a long time to get everything down. So i'm only sharing a little. Nutrition groups are water,fats,minerals,vitamins, and protein. Vitamin A helps your night vision and vitamin C prevents scurvy and helps heal cuts vitamin K helps make scabs and vitamin D is made by our skin in the sunlight and works with calcium to make strong bones and DD= rickets. And 1 more thing hypothesis is a good guess!!!

  5. I learned in the nutrition unit that fat gives you energy. I thought that only carbs and protein gave us energy. I also learned that water helps get rid of wast. I thought it did it itself. ok, enough of that. In the metric unit I learned that meter measures length, Gram measures mass, and liter measures volume or capacity. I learned a lot this unit. If I were to tell everything I learned this unit it would take a LONG time. So That's about it.

  6. I learned that fat makes your hair shinny and your skin smooth. And that you have to drink 8 glasses a day.And I did't know that protein builds bones and that water makes up your blood and that iron carries oxygen to your blood.And that your body is two thirds of water.And vitamin A helps your night vision. Did you now that carbs come from plants.

    (1) water
    (2) minerals
    (3) protein
    (4) vitamins
    (5) carbs
    (6) fats
    and the jobs
    waters jobs.
    (1)makes up your blood
    (2)keeps your body temperature normal
    (3)helps digest food
    (4) helps get rid of waste
    fats jobs
    (1)gives us energy
    (2) makes hair shiny and skin smooth
    proteins job
    (1) makes muscles stronger by repairing the tears you get when exercising
    vitamins job
    Vitamin A makes you have good night vision
    vitamin C prevents scurvy. Scurvy is deadly. And it helps heal cuts
    vitamin D works with calcium to make strong bones and prevents rickets When you get rickets your bones bend.
    vitamin K helps make scabs
    the carbs are starch fiber and sugar
    fiber pushes waste though large intestine
    starch gives you slow energy
    sugar gives you fast energy

  9. I learned that you get vitamin d from the sunlight. You also should drink eight cups of water every day. The outer part of a piece of rice is called the husk. Fruits that you can peel into sections are called citrus fruit. Vitamin A helps get good night vision, vitamin K gives you scabs. Some things water do for you are

    #1 Help digest food

    #2 Helps keep our temperature normal

    #3 Helps get rid of waste

    #4 Helps make up our blood

    Calcium deficiency disease is Rickets. Calcium is most found in the dairy group.

    Water- our bodies have more than 2/3 of water.

    Helps make our blood.

    Helps get rid of wastes.

    Helps keep our body temperature normal.


    Minerals- Come from rocks and metal.
    The two main minerals that we’ve been studying are Calcium and Iron.

    Iron- Helps blood carry oxygen

    Calcium- makes strong bones and the DD is RICKETS

    Vitamin D comes from the sun. Wow.
    I hope we will all do good on our test!!!!

  13. I learned that calcium and vitamin D work together to make strong bones. I thought it was interesting that 2/3 of our body is water. I did not know that vitamin A helps you with night vision. Vitamin K helps our bodies make scabs. I think it is cool that you get vitamin D from the sun - actually, I think it is warm. Good luck on your tests everybody!

  14. I learned all about water and here are some interesting facts:
    1. It helps digest your food
    2. It gets rid of waste
    3. It keeps our body temperatures normal
    4. It helps us make blood
    5. We need eight glasses of water per day to maintain our health
    6. Two thirds of our body is water

    I also learned about vitamins and here are the facts that I learned:
    1. I learned that Vitamin A gives us good night vision
    2. Vitamin K makes scabs if you are cut and bleeding
    3. Vitamin D is made by sunlight and it helps us to grow our skin back
    4. Vitamin C comes from fruits like citrus - limes, lemons and oranges

    We learned about the Metric System. Here are some facts:
    1. The system is based upon the unit of 10
    2. Everyone in the world uses the Metric System - except the United States
    3. All scientists use the Metric System

    We also learned about mass and weight:
    1. The earth's gravity is much more than the moon's gravity
    2. If you were to go to the moon, you would weigh six times less than your weight on Earth.
    3. The units that we use for mass are grams & Kilograms
    4. The units that we use for weight is ounces and pounds

    We learned a few facts about Iron
    1. It carries oxygen throughout our bodies
    2. If you cook food in an iron pan, some iron molecules can transfer to your food - and it can be a good dietary supplement

    I really liked learning about these topics and I hope that everyone does good on their test!
