The One and Only Ivan

Ivan has been in his domain separated from his kind for years. He has made friends with Bob, Stella and Julia. Now, Rudy, a precious baby elephant, has arrived.

Please share your thoughts on this wonderful book so far. Which character is your favorite? Why? Do you like Katherine Applegate's sparse style of writing short, powerful sentences? Can you think of any memorable lines or themes so far?

  1. I am loving reading Katherine Applegate's The One and Only Ivan for the second time! I can't imagine being separated from humans for years. The theme of loneliness is definitely clear to me. I remember Ivan saying that he couldn't remember the feeling of the touch of someone else as Bob lay on his stomach. That is very sad to me. I also think that the theme of hopelessness is clear in this book so far, as well. Ivan and his friends do not think that they are ever getting out of their domains. They don't talk about escape, either. I am excited to read more about Rudy to you all. She is a fantastic character!

  8. Katherine Applegate does a great job with the characters and what they are feeling, because they tell what they are feeling when they feel it and I already read this book and I still love the characters - especially Ruby! I cannot wait to get to the end again!

  10. My favorite character is Bob because you make the funniest voice for him and always has no idea what's going on. He's always like What's this? What's that? I think Katherine Applegate has the BEST writing of any author! Her words and sentences can be so powerful! I also like it to where she puts in funny thing like when Ivan threw the meball at the girl and boy and then said sometimes I wish the glass wasn't there. Or when the bird said to Mac,"Kiss me big boy! pucker up!" I think this whole book is a memorable line! I CAN'T WAIT TO HEAR ABOUT RUBY!!!! :)

P.S. The daily puppy is adorable!:)

  12. I love Katherine Applegate's writing! Whenever read aloud rolls around, I know that Ivan is going to do something funny! My favorite characters are Bob, Ivan (of course!), and the parrot that goes "Kiss me, big boy!" to Mack. Ivan has a lot of different opinions, like when the spit- pebble kids spit and threw pebbles at Ivan, he was like, "I am so glad that the glass is here." And later on in the book, after the 4:00 show, the spit- pebble kids came back, and then he threw a me- ball at the kids! ( I guess he isn't getting on Santa's nice list, same with the spit- pebble kids!) Then he said, "Sometimes, I wish that the glass wasn't here." And poor, poor Bob. All of his siblings are dead! What would have happened if Bob had eaten the little beetle? I think that eating bugs is disgusting! Who would do that?! I TOTALLY think that the whole book is a memorable line! 3-P ROCKS!

  13. The whole book is like a memorable line! There is no way people could not like this. I love Ivan's friendship with all the other animals. I love how people always have raised hands because they think it is so cool. If you have already read this book, you would still love hearing it. I haven't read it before but I love it now. It seems like an ordinary book but inside its so much better than you expected.
