  4. I already love pioneers! Today I learned that wagons travel at 1MPH! I also learned that the people wanted to make it to Oregon before the British. There were a LOT of Indians there.

  6. I love learning about the Westward Expansion! My Pioneer name is Dorothy Morrison. They started their journey May second mid 1840's Independence, Missouri. The time to leave was when the grass turned green. That was late April or early May. The goal was to get their before the winter snow fall. The United states already covered Atlantic Ocean to the Rocky Mountains. Few people had got West before the 1840's. They traveled west for cheep, fertile land. The journey was going to be 5-6 months, and 2,000 miles. A good wagon cost about 85 dollars. The wagons were usually 4 feet wide, 2 feet deep, and 10-11 feet long. The stuff packed in their wagon was important. Their were guide books that said only few cooking utensils necessary as it much increases the load. Bedding should consist no more than blankets, sheets, covers, and pillows. To survive you need a weapon, a holster, pistols 5 pound of gun powder and 20 pounds of lead. On the trail, children were expected to act like adults, and not get lost. Most of the time nobody rode in a wagon, they walked beside. They tried to cover 20 miles a day going 2MPH! Land marks told them they were going the right way. They used Chimney Rock as target practice. They traveled thru Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, Idaho, and to Oregon. Their were many deaths along the way. Their were 10 graves per mile! I love learning about the Oregon Trail

  8. Learning about pioneers are so fun! My pioneer name is Octavia Violet Richardson. On Monday my class watched a view to learn on pioneers. Some things I learned are that the Oregon trail is that it is 2,000 miles long and takes about 5-6 months to get to Oregon! Some people went for adventure and some people went for cheap land and many other reasons. But in the end there were 1 and a half million people that started the journey. But many people died on the way. There was choking dust, drowning, accidental gun shots, Rattle snakes that were 8-12 feet long and many more causes of death. They only went 2 miles per hour!

  9. Today we learned so much about pioneers. They brought very little forks and knives because they only went 2 miles per hour and heavy things weighed the wagons down. The snakes were 8 feet long and the wagons were 85 dollars. 400 people died from indians, accidental gun shots, choking wind, snakebites, sickness and traveled 2,000 miles.

  10. I am so excited that we are learning about pioneers. It is going to be my favorite unit because Ms. Papadakes keeps telling us that it is so good and telling us about it! And it sounds so fun!
First I want to tell some BK:
many people went on the Oregon Trail like doctors, blacksmiths, farmers, shop owners, and many more.
Some new learning that I learned was:
people traveled in big groups as large as 40-60 people.
    I have more BK:
Thomas Jefferson bought the Louisiana Territory and they were racing England for the Oregon Territory. That is why the President wanted them to travel.
A Wow fact I have: After the Oregon Trail the railroad started and no one traveled by wagon any more.
Some New Learning I had was: The Oregon Trail lasted from 1840 to the late 1860s.
A Wow Fact I got was: You had to travel 200 mile or more to get where you wanted to go, and .5 million immigrants traveled on the Oregon Trail.
Another Wow Fact I got is: It took 5 to 6 months to get there. That is a lot compared to how long it takes on a plane now...2-3 hours.
One last New Learning fact: A good wagon $85.
Note: that was a lot back then.
I loved explaining all of this with you. Bye.

  11. I can't wait for the rest of Pioneers.
we started out with a video that may help us with the rest of the pioneer things, here are some Brain tracks I got from the video.
    ? what is a blacksmith
    ! 40 wagons
? why did Thomas Jefferson want the land
! The United States covered the land from the pacific ocean to the rocky mountains.
? why want a cheap land
? why did they take criminals with them
! they cross 2,000 miles of uncharted territory
    ! 5to6 months journey
NL and ! a good wagon is 85 dollars
? why do they want to leave when the grass is 4 feet long
NL and ? why are the kids expected to act like adults
    BK Pioneers are always optimistic
BK that is a very long journey
? how do you turn your wagon into a ship
this is not really a brain track sad that lots of people died
BK from the organ trail to California takes half a month
? why do they have to leave in the spring
BK DANGEROUS because of snake bites, sickness accidental gun shots
! some people only went for adventure.
I hope you learned something new, I loved sharing my brain tracks with you BYE!

  12. I learned a lot about the Oregon Trail in only 3 days. First, the main trail is 2000 miles long! It takes around 5 to 6 months to get there! That is half of a year! They can't take much cooking equipment though because it really slows your wagon down and every day you try to travel about 20 miles a day and you are only going 2 miles per hour! Most cars go around 32 miles per hour just in carpool! Also it was very dangerous! There were rattle snakes and choking dusts, bad thunder storms and sicknesses like cholera, dysentery, measles, typhoid and there are also fires! So far this is really fun!

  14. I think pioneers are awesome. The pioneers rode at 2 miles per hour. Plus they traveled for 6 months! If they took a plane they would have been there in 2 hours!
They used bison to pull the wagons. They had to be very picky about what they put on the wagon. They couldn't be like " Oh boy, lets take my pointless nail polish and my oven!" No no no they can't do that. My pioneer name is Miles Dawson. Pioneers are amazing!

  15. I have learned a lot about the Oregon Trail. Here are a few facts I learned. The Oregon Trail started in the 1840s. The Oregon Trail was 2,000 miles. Here a few reasons why people went for the Oregon Trail cheap land and cheap fertile. The wagons went 2 miles per hour. The Oregon Trail trip took 5-6 months. A lot of people died on the Oregon Trail reasons why sickness, drowning, rattle snake bites, actual gun shots, and fires.

  16. We are learning about the Oregon Trail. I learned that the pioneers had only 40 wagons. I can't believe that the criminals came to! I wonder who wrote the guide book? Kids had to act like adults. I know how that feels. Also, they traveled 2000 miles. Over 400,000 pioneers traveled the Oregon Trail. the Oregon trail took 5 to 6 months to complete.

  17. I love studying pioneers! I have so much New Learning! We learned so much in only three days, like if wagon trains aren't organized, they don't really last that long, and I thought that it was really interesting that the rattlesnakes that the pioneers saw when they crossed the Oregon Trail were ten to twelve feet long! Snakes creep me out.
Some of the reasons that pioneers went were to make a new, better life, they were trying to make a fortune in a new place, some [farmers] went for fertile land, and others went for religious freedom. Some people went just for fun, because they thought adventure would come on the Oregon Trail!
The reason why Thomas Jefferson wanted us to make this journey across the Oregon territory was because he wanted to make the United States of America larger, covering land from ocean to ocean. But, there was a catch. We had to get to the Oregon territory before England, or else they would keep the land for themselves.
Half a billion people went on the hard journey across the Oregon Trail, like doctors, blacksmiths, tailors, storekeepers, prospectors, ministers, teachers, and many more!
Even criminals went on the Oregon Trail!
The main trail is 20,000 miles long, and since they stopped once in a while, it took them five to six months to cross the Oregon trail! That's like about half a year!
This was the first wagon ride that spanned the entire continent.
Even though most people's destination was into the Oregon territory, some people took their wagons about halfway through the trail and went South, to California or Utah.
Some politicians called reaching the Oregon territory our Manifest Destiny.
I have so much more to share with you, but I hope you liked my brain tracks!
