  2. In 1540 Spanish explorer Pedro De Tovar was the first person to meet the Hopi.
The Spanish tried to convert the Hopi and other Pueblo tribes to Christianity but the Hopi refused. So Hopi joined forces with the Pueblo tribe and led to the Pueblo revolt war. Hopi means peaceful. The Hopi's main crop is corn. In the 1800s Navajo tribe tried to take over Hopi lands. President Chester Arthur made a Navajo-Hopi act settlement. It was supposed to stop Navajo attacking Hopi. Today Hopi and Navajo tribes still do not agree who should use the land.
