Hopi Happenings!

The Hopi people got their name from a word that means "peaceful people". Hmmm...very interesting and quite a contrast to our Comanche tribe!

Please share interesting information from your research so far.

  1. I love studying the Hopi! Over the past few days, I have learned that women own the houses and land. I thought that was interesting because in general, men usually are more important than the women. The Hopi live in big stone houses, that kind of sounds like regular houses. They don't have much water, so they plant crops in ways to use every drop of rain. The Hopi make most of their clothing out of cotton, that sounds really comfortable! One more fact I learned is the Hopi religion is connected to their life as farmers. That was really interesting because farmers do a lot for the Hopi, so it makes sense.

I am very grateful that I got the Hopi tribe because it seemed the most interesting to me, and I also think that I will enjoy researching about it on our new third grade database: PebbleGo Next. Over the past week or so, we have started kicking off our Native American unit and have focused on four main and different tribes (you will have different choices depending on your class): the Comanche, Shoshone, Shawnee- and then the Hopi! Hopi was my number one choice and I have learned so many interesting things about the Hopi I would like to share:
Fun Fact Number One: an original Hopi home you might of been able to find is usually up to two or three stories high! That was a HUGE wow fact for me because when I imagine a time way back, like when the Native Americans were in the Southwest tribal Region, I think that tools were probably not that advanced yet. So, I think it is pretty cool that the homes were two or three stories high.
Fun Fact Number Two: Hopi means wise, clever, kind, and knowing in the language of the Hopi people. That makes a lot of sense because just think, would you like to call yourself kind, wise, etc. Even if you were not that, you wouldn't like to call yourself "enemy", or "harm", right? I guess they just wanted to give themselves a good reputation.
Fun Fact Number Three: The Hopi have a very tight religion between dances, farming and crops. You may not think that that is surprising, but what REALLY wowed me was that the have katsina (kuhh-CHEE-nuh) and crop dances. One for every month. WOW!!!! That is a lot of songs and dance!
