The Hopi were peaceful people. They lived dense because of the small amount of space. Their reservation is completely surrounded by their enemy the Navajo.
Hopi women rock! They seem to be much more important to the family than women from other Native American tribes. I wonder why. Children are in their mother's clan. Women even own the family's house and land! If I were a Native American woman in a tribe of my choice, I would be a Hopi woman.
Along time ago in the Hopi men hunted animals such as antelope, deer, and rabbit. Hopi can mean peaceful, knowing and wise. Men from the Hopi made clothes out of animal fur and woven cloth. The Hopi where one of the only tribes to grow cotton for some cool clothing. Women from their family own the houses and land. In a ceremony, the groom's parents sometimes wash the couples hair. The villages leader usually came from the clan that started the village. In the past, each Hopi village had its own leader. The walls of the Hopi houses are plastered on the inside and outside with clay. The Hopi people have lived in these houses for many many years.
The Hopi hunted antelope, deer and rabbits. Their main crops were corn, squash and beans. I think it is very interesting that their homes are on top of each other. They use ladders!
Some of the really interesting facts that I have learned so far are... The Hopi women lead the land! The clans are named after animals. The leader of the village normally comes from the clan who started the village. The Hopi has lived in the same houses for hundreds of years. Oraibi is the oldest village of Hopi. The Hopi share a lot of customs with the Pueblo People. Hopi can mean "good" "peaceful" or "knowing" in the Hopi Language. To get married you have to marry someone from a different clan. I thought that was really interesting. I have really enjoyed doing research about the Hopi tribe and I know I will enjoy doing more research to.
