Dr. Simpson, Flexibility and Optimism!

Dr. Simpson did a wonderful job reviewing the mindsets of Flexibility and Optimism! Both mindsets are important to making a person's life happy and healthy.

Please share an example from your life when you were either flexible or optimistic. Tell us how your flexibility or optimism made your life better in that situation.

  1. One day Mrs. Babine asked me if I wanted to move from being a second grade teacher to being a third grade teacher. I was very honest and told her that I respect her very much, but really love teaching second grade with my teacher friends. She encouraged me take a risk and try it out. So, I did! I have to say that I just LOVE third grade! Making the move forced me to learn new things and challenge my brain. My fear of not being with my second grade teacher friends turned out not to be true at all. We are still great friends and I also have new teacher friends, too!

  3. Last summer, we were going to Colorado and we were at the airport waiting. We realized our plane did not leave for another hour. Mom tried to change our plane and it worked! We got to Colorado ... we looked for our bags for 30 minutes. We found out our bags were on our original flight!!! I was flexible and optimistic in this story.

  5. I was optimistic when reading was super hard for me. And I thought everyone else was ahead of me. But when ever I worked at it I got better. I have to wake up at 6 in the morning two times a week to get here at 7:00 in the morning to practice reading. This takes a lot of optimism.

  6. We were driving to the airport and there was a car accident. A motorcycle hit an 18 wheeler and the 18 wheeler fell on top of the motorcycle. We were waiting in traffic for 2 hours. We had to wait two hours for the next flight but we were flexible.

  7. Hi. Today I would like to talk about flexibility. I am sorry that I am not talking about optimism, but flexibility is on my mind. Some of you might have heard me say this but I will say it again! One time when my dad, my brother and I were going to Austin, there was a giant traffic jam because of construction. It was already going to be a two hour long trip and now it was going to be three hours. But my brother and my dad and I did not care! We just had fun watching movies and laughing and eating. We just decided not to stress and be FLEXIBLE. We were actually also being optimistic because we were also hopeful that we would get there at some point even if it took a long time. I really agreed to what Dr. Simpson said about optimistic people when they see a half full glass and they say the glass is half full not half empty. If you were a pessimist, you would look at the same glass and say the glass is half empty. My dad my brother and I were being optimistic and flexible!

  8. I was flexible and optimistic when I went to Lima, Peru two summers ago. I went to school at a place called Santissimo Nombre de Jesus for two weeks. At first, I was nervous about going to school where everyone spoke only Spanish. Then I figured out how to make friends there. It was easy! Everyone there was so friendly! I still miss Ana Belen and Juan Pablo.

  10. Hi, A time in my life when I was flexible was when my dad and I were leaving Colorado but just as we were about to get on the plane we found out are flight was cancelled... for twelve hours! My dad and I made the most of it. I was optimistic that we would not be stuck at the airport for a long time. I played my iPad,slept, and talked to my dad. That's a time in my life that I was optimistic and flexible.

  12. Sometimes I help my mom cook dinner. On this particular day, I was cooking meatballs with my brother Burke and my mom. I always have to be flexible when I cook with my little brother because he gets impatient and upset if he doesn't get to go first. Little brothers can teach you a big lesson on being flexible! They can also be very fun too.

  14. Hi,
I really enjoyed and appreciated Dr. Simpson's message. I think it was very important and nice to present and remind us about our mindsets and show us the key to happiness and health for our body and brain. The specific mindsets were flexibility and optimism. I remember an occasion where I had to be super flexible and optimistic. We were coming back to Houston from Los Angeles where we were visiting my grandparents and aunt. We were already very late to get to the airport and as soon as we got there we saw the line to check in our luggages were extremely long and wrapped around the whole outside of the airport. I was being optimistic and said: "don't worry we will make it to our flight and get back home we just have to be patient and see what we can do." But If we stood in that long line just to check in our suitcases there would have been no way we would make it to our flight, so we decided to be flexible and to only take our essential things on a carry on so we don't have to stay in that long line and left our other bags with my aunt in her car. But when we went in the airport even the security line seemed to be long as well. So many people including us ended up missing their flights. So we called my aunt to come back and pick us up since there were no other available flights that day. Even though at first we were disappointed but we actually decided to be optimistic and make the most out of an extra day of vacation and it actually ended up to be the best day of our whole trip. The next day we got to the airport early and were able to take all of our suitcases with us and get back home safe and sound. So having optimism and being flexible made us enjoy our journey so much more.
