Katherine Applegate is a Newbery Award winner for The One and Only Ivan and Laura Vaccaro Seeger is a 2- time Caldecott Honor Winner for Green and First the Egg.

Write about two things that you learned, thought was interesting, or stood out in your mind from each author.
I liked Katherine Applegate because she said it was okay to make mistakes. Also she did research, and made up some very good dialogue for the main characters. Laura Vaccaro Seeger was a very good artist and I liked her pictures of the bull. I liked her very clever cut-outs in the book Green.

ReplyDeleteI like Katherine Applegate because she has a lot of sense of humor. I think it's amazing of how much research she did to find about Ivan the gorilla. my favorite story Katherine Applegate wrote was definitely The One And Only Ivan.
I liked both authors sooooooo much. I think Katharine Applegate was interesting because she loved to research the most. And that she wrote a book from a newspaper article. And that she kept on reading about Ivan and that she went into Ivan's point of view. That would be really hard to talk in a another animals point of view. I think Laura Seeger was interesting because she got an idea for a book from looking at the beach and she saw a seal I would have just walked right by it. And I think it was cool that we got to see her writers notebook just like ours. And that she was only a good reader when she was older just like Ms. P. I am so happy we are able to see visiting authors.
ReplyDeleteI liked Katherine Applegate because she said that you are not just going to get a idea and put it down on a paper you have to revise and you make mistakes. And I like how she took real things about Ivan and turn them into something different, like how she made Ivan's tire into a tire swing and incorporated Bob into the story. I also like how Laura Vaccaro Seeger showed us her writers note book because she said that she puts down all of her ideas in her note book just like we do. I also like it how Katherine Applegate took one single strip of news paper and turned into a entire story, and how at first she didn't like reading and had trouble reading and now she is a award winning author.

ReplyDeleteit's so hard to get from a newspaper that whole book.Well that's how she got the book. Well that's what started the book. Especaily how the charectors were really good [ LOVED BOB] 3 words BEST STORY EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A GREAT ARTIST!!! I loved the cut outs.and how she cut it out so that one word turned into another. And Green it was such a good book.

I learned that Katherine Applegate had a hard time reading just like Miss Papadakes. Katherine Applegate showed that even if in the beginning if you aren't very good at something, is doesn't mean that you can't turn out good in the end. And now, Katherine Applegate is a Newbery Award winner for her outstanding novel The one and only Ivan. My favorite part of Katherine Applegate's visit was seeing the picture of herself on her bed, with old style curlers in her hair, wearing pjs, slippers, and about 200 crumpled up pieces of paper on her bed. She also said that she gets payed to be a slob.
ReplyDeleteI learned from Laura Vaccaro Seeger that you can write a book about anything. When her editor came to her house one time, he saw a chair with a rainbow bear in it. Her editor asked what the story was behind the bear, and she said that there's not much of a story, she just bought the bear from a shop that sells old things. Then her editor said,'' Then I want you to make one.''
And that is how the Dog and Bear series started. My favorite part of laura Vaccaro Seeger's visit was drawing the bully ( the bull ) from the book The Bully her lastest book she wrote.
The biggest thing I learned was that the first draft is always, always, ALWAYS, going to be absolutely HORRIBLE.
I liked Katherine Applegate because she was funny. It was interesting that she did not just make up a lot of things she found a news paper article and researched about Ivan. She went into Ivan's point of view and she found a lot about Ivan that she did not no. I liked that she added things to the story like the boring tire into a tire swing and how she put Bob in the story.
ReplyDeleteI like Laura Vaccaro Seeger because how she showed us her note book and kind of how to get are characters and how she described her people in the book.I like how she saw a sleeping seal on the beach and wrote a story about it too. I hope we get to see more authors soon.
I loved the seal in the picture! I liked Laura Seeger's book Green because the pictures were cut out and made you look. Katherine Applegate's book The One And Only Ivan.I thought Katherine Applegate was very funny. I loved the visiting authors! :)

ReplyDeleteI liked katherine Applegate because I like how she turned Bob from a cat to a squirrel to a dog. But I did not like how she made Stella die. One thing I think that is interesting is that she learned everything from the newspaper. I all so like Laura seeger's book called Green my favorite part was when she cut holes in the pages and the animal or thing would be the color on the next page because of the pages have holes in them
I love seeing visiting authors because I love seeing visiting authers also because when you skype or write letters they might not awnser or write back until a week or a month or even a YEAR or worst of all NEVER!!!!!!!! I loved being gorillas with Katharine applegate. I also liked drawing BULLY!!!!!! I LOVE SEEING VISITING AUTHERS!!!!!!!!!!! expesally two in a WEEK awesome
ReplyDeleteI learned from Laura Seeger that she goes places to write that WE wouldn't expect her to go. She also can get ideas from anything which sounds pretty hard if you ask me. From Katherine Applegate I learned that she gets into the character's mind before she writes about it. And she really proved how lonely Ivan felt in a cage for 27 years. I LOVE visiting authors. I can't wait for the next one!

ReplyDeleteLaura Veccara Seagar stood out because she wrote a book called Bully about how one person can hurt you and then person that got hurt hurts others. It was a book about how you should not bully others so that bullying can stop.
Friends in 3-P I am so glad that you enjoyed both Katherine Applegate and Laura Vacarro Seeger. They were so different but the message is so similar. As writers/artist, we begin... And then carefully, edit and revise, edit and revise, edit and revise. I loved seeing Laura's notebook TOO! Thank YOU for being such great listeners, learners, readers and explorers.
ReplyDeleteI liked Katherine Applegate because she did lots of research and looked at lots of newspapers so she could write The One And Only Ivan. I liked the book because it was based upon a true story.
ReplyDeleteLaura Vacarro Seeger got her ideas whenever she was walking around. She always wants people to look very closely at the pictures because she felt like the pictures could tell stories as well. Her books contained pages with holes in them to focus on the colors from the previous page and make a picture on the next page.
I really liked Katherine Applegate because she had a great sense of humor and I hope she comes back next year!!!!!

Laura Seager's book Green didn't have many words, but the pictures did the talking. Her style is to use only a few words.
